    Superb

Hotel staff are extremely nice. Even gave me free unbrella when it rained.

Be aware that subway & trains stop running at midnight in Tokyo. If you are late from city center, you'll need to pay for expensive cab ride.

    Superb

Just stayed one night in this new modern ryokan. Very pleasant. Great Tokyo location for those who like to explore streets, local temples, etc. Working access to Ueno Park and easy access to Narita via the Keisei Line.

    Exceptional

Ryokan style small hotel in a very interesting and easialy accessible area of Tokyo. The hosts are exceptional, and speak English. Very good breakfasts which were very affordable, and good laundry facilities- a real bonus when travelling. Many thoughtful extras , e.g. advice about local restaurants, sites, and umbrellas for guests' use.

Our room did not smell of cigarette smoke, but the hallways and common areas did. We were there during a very cold, wet few days, which would make airing these areas difficult.

    Fabulous

We especially liked the location in a more residential area of Tokyo, near local stores and food vendors. We also liked the free access to the internet, plus the bus loop stop was across the street from the front door of the Annex.

Based on what we thought we were getting, we have no criticisms. It offered more than we expected.

    Fabulous

The ryokan is in a very nice location close to Nippori station, in a lovely, lively neighbourhood. The rooms were japanese style - a bit basic, but clean and functional.

The area around is interesting and different from other parts of Tokyo. It is close to metro stations and a 15 minute walk from the rail line that goes direct to Narita airport. Free wifi and free use of computers in lobby (with printers). Close to restaurants. Low key hotel with no frills.

There is a strong smell of tobacco smoke in the lobby and this permeated the floor of our room and indeed our room. The window opened to allow us to freshen the room a bit but the smell of smoke spoiled this visit for me.

    Very good

Nice hotel and very friendly and helpful staff..only minor gripe is that they could put curtains or blinds up as it gets very light early in the morning with only paper screens

    Superb

Its location in Taito and its convenience to the metro and JR train lines.

    Fabulous

It was extremely clean and the staff were helpful. Situated in an interesting part of old Tokyo that is not touristy. A range of small shops close by sold a good selection of various foods and necessaries. Well located near two subway stations (one on a main jr line). A great introduction to the ryokan experience.

It can be a little hard to find.

    Fabulous

Japanese style room with comfortable futon. The paper window blinds were delightful but let in light, so an eye mask may be useful. Excellent location for Yanaka and Sendagi.

    Early checkout - 10am.

    Good

It's in a charming neighborhood and the price is decent for a comfortable place. Staff were friendly.

Our room was somewhat worn looking with scuff marks on the walls, a mildewy shower curtain, and terrible lighting.

    Exceptional

Despite being a small traditional-feeling hotel in an old neighbourhood, it had all of the modern ammenities I've come to expect from the large chains in big cities. I booked a twin Japanese-style room, as I thought that would give me a more authentic Japanese experience, and I very much enjoyed it, without having to miss out on all of the modern technologies like wifi . Our room was lovely, with traditional Japanese tatami-mat flooring and futons. I was afraid the futons would be uncomfortable (I'm used to beds), but they were actually more comfortable than any hotel bed I've ever slept in. There was also a table with some comfortable pillows to sit on which we used often. There was an alarm clock with what looked like maybe an iphone port on it, but we didn't try it. The staff was friendly, helpful, spoke English, and pointed us towards various local restaurants and other things in the area. They even gave us a small present when we left. The room was larger than I expected, the wifi was sufficiently fast for me to upload hundreds of pictures to my blog. The shower was strong, the tub was deep, and the A/C was powerful. The room came with tea, coffee, and a kettle, though I didn't try it. It had a small fridge which we used heavily. The location is within a few minutes walk to both a subway station (Sendagi) and a train station (Nippori), from which it is easy to get to the airport on the Keisei line. Getting to the other parts of Tokyo was very quick and easy. There are many small owner-run shops and restaurants in the area, which really made it feel like a small town despite being in the middle of a huge city. There were two supermarkets and at least two convenience stores nearby as well which we went to a few times. An unexpected local festival went right past our hotel around 7:30pm on one night of our stay, and I really felt the district's pride and tradition. It was a great experience. I would definitely come back again, I loved this place.

This is a very tiny gripe, but the blankets were just a bit too short for me - I'm about 6 feet tall (183 cm). I expect they're made with typical Japanese heights in mind. I didn't say anything, but maybe they would have given us larger ones if I had. At my height it wasn't really a big deal, but if you're taller, maybe you would mind more.

Wonderful location. Yanaka is a small village, old style, at the center of Tokyo.
